No problems using Fedora 31 and the next to latest BOINC client version from the BOINC download website.

I much prefer the BOINC website downloads as it allows more control where things are on my computer and it works fine.
I have another computer with the Fedora 34 and latest BOINC client on it but have not run this project on it to see if it works (it probably needs hardware upgrades before software is an issue).

2) Message boards : Number crunching : What happens with certificates ? (Message 1498)

G'Day Tullio,

I know that you run Linux and are doing some Linux work units on this project. Your problem is with Windows.

So the simplest way to get Windows working is to copy the "ca-bundle.crt" certificate file from your Linux machine to your Windows BOINC directory (or where ever your ca-bundle file is kept). Restart the manager and all should work.

I did this (I could of used the ca-bundle on my own Linux machine but den777 over at WUProp gave a link to download the one from his Ubuntu machine, so I used that for my Windows machines), and it all worked.

However there were still about 5 projects that I run (ODLK, LatinSquares, Milkyway, yoyo and TN-Grid) that I had to detach and re-attach to get all things working on my Windows XP machine and iThena had to detach and re-attach on my Windows 7 machine.

If unsure then you can read the postings over at WUProp, under the 'peer certificate' hrading and find the den777 posting.

This may also help others.

The issue is a certificate relating to HTTPS access to the web and it expired on the 30/9/2021, it was called IdentTrust DST Root CA X3, and was replaced by ISRG Root X1.

In the case of my Win XP machine I had to download the ISRG Root X1 file as a .pem file and install just that file into my Windows machine (I had to google how to do it) as a few web sites not related to Boinc would not allow access anymore (in my case the Australian government health site for Covid information).

You asked why some affected and others not, this replacement certificate has been in existence since 2015 but not everyone updated to use it as the other was still working, particularly on custom installs which take a bit of updating.

Hope this may help a few people

3) Message boards : Number crunching : Validate error- Work Unit (Message 1374)

I appear to have run my last batch just for the hours as not a single WU validated for anyone, type of OS, CPU made no difference, one is still inconclusive since the 14/2/2021.

Hoping I will get some points this time round.

I have just completed WU 1384465 and I am the 5th person to do so. All are at Validation Inconclusive. Isn't at least one of them correct?

I have another two I am about to start (1 has just started) and they also have had 4 previous completions all Validation Inconclusive. They are WU 1343731 and WU 1354673
If they can't be validated then they should be cancelled as they are wasting a huge amount of processing time.

I know you said before that even the failures can help (at least I think you said that), but failure after failure (which is what they become if no validations occur), does not help the volunteers with no reward for lots of processing time.

I am not complaining as this is a very well run project and you are a responsive Admin, but I may just abort these work units as I doubt I will get anything for them.

No Worries, we will get a wingman when we get a wingman.
WU's are not going to be purged, so we wait for Boinc to be "logical" and resend the work units.
Seems they are placed at the back of the queue.

I have 5 work units pending since at least the 13th of May, all had a wingman who aborted their work units (host 2132) and they have not been resent out yet.

The hosts are real otherwise they can't abort work units but it is taking awhile to get the work out to a new host.

I can wait.

7) Message boards : Number crunching : Credits for t8=t4=t2=5.000 seriously? (Message 849)

Well 5,000 points would of been great even though low for my long running work unit, but alas it was not meant to be.

After 3 days 14 hours, tying up 4 cores during this time, the WU decided to error out with EXIT_CHILD_FAILED, whatever that means.

Maybe when the site went down and the trickle up messages could not be sent?

Very disappointed This WU

The problem is that no one is sure how long the WU will run, be it for 1, 2 or 3 days or more. So that is why there is a 5,000 fixed credit bonus for these work units.

However if a work unit runs for 3 days using 4 cores, they are tied up for the whole 3 days, that's 24 hours x 3 = 72 and then x4 cores = 288 hours that those cores are in use.

5,000 credits is only 17.36 credits an hour, a bit low for the time spent working on the WU. If it ran for 2 days this jumps to 26 cr/h a bit better.

On average the 5,000 is OK, as most work units don't run for days on end, for the ones that do it is on the low side.

Validate Error on this WU for every person who has processed it.
Linux or Windows VM, not one validation.
WU seems to have ended correctly (at least for me), but it is a very short WU, so maybe that is the problem.

Please check This WU

I have just finished a t4 work unit and found that the wingman is running a t1 work unit.

How can they validate each other?

Thanks

Don't worry about it, after a sit down and look I realized they are the same work units but you can either use 1 core or many to process them, the results will the same (hopefully).

All Good
