I have attached to the project and have VirtualBox installed. But I've never used VirtualBox before. I receive this message when requesting work:

There's a couple of things that could be causing a problem.

First, go into your BIOS and make sure VT-X is turned on. If it is, great. If not, turn it on.

Then reboot.

Now, regardless of whether VT-X was turned on or not, DETACH the QuChemPedIA project.

Next, attach QuChemPedIA again, and see if the error has gone away.

VT-X must be turned on -- and BOINC (as of 7.14.x) will remember if you tried to run VBOX without VT-X and will never let you run it after that. This is why you need to detach from QuChemPedIA and then join the project again after turning on VT-X.

Do I ever feel like a moron, I forgot to reboot.

I am finding that VirtualBox (ver 6.0) will not keep my settings saved. After working for a time the processor and memory settings always revert to the default. How do I get them to stay saved?

You don't need to set anything. Just install VirtualBox and attach to the project.
I don't even install the additional items, such as USB support, Python, etc. Just the basic VBox install will do.

NOTE: Whether the work units run is another matter. Some error out quickly. At least it seems to be using one work unit per core, which is more than for the native Linux version.

Yup, I've got that now. My problem was that I was trying to crunch to many WUs at once. At the time I thought if I could speed up VB that I would be OK.
In the end, I simply had Boinc crunch on only 2 of my 6 CPUs and everything has been fine since. Thanks!

Just my opinion but QuChem is the best VBox project I have attempted to run so far. Not only is it easy to manage but it also runs quite well concurrently with other non-Vbox projects. Few other VBox projects can do that.
