If you can't find an app_config.xml file you will need to create one (with text editor) here...

this PC -> ProgramData -> BOINC -> projects -> quchempedia.univ-angers.fr_athome

@PDW
There must be others who have Windows Pro and have QuChemPedia successfully run tasks to comment on this ?

My Windows 10 Pro machine fried a MB (actual on-board resistor turned to black carbon soot; took the power supply 12V line with it)
It'll be a week (maybe longer) before I can attempt this on that machine.

Although, I have a spare laptop, Windows 10 Pro license, and a custom VM that successfully runs nwchem WU's; if I can find the time, can newly build Windows 10 Pro 1903 on the laptop, copy the custom VM over I can test both project d/led VM's and the known working quantity (custom VM).

@Byron Leigh Hatch
Alternately, a custom built VM running native Linux nwchem WU's successfully on one of our machines could be tested on your Windows 10 Pro host.
Just need to transfer the vdi file to you, you add a default Linux (Debian?) VM machine in VBox, then attach the drive, fire it up then change the VM host name(tricky part for beginner; we could change the name before shipment) , then attach to the project in BOINC with your email and ask for work.

Yes, it will download work units for the number of threads but it did only run one at a time.

still errors :(
Yes :(

From your Windows Features screen dump I see there are also items lower down in the list :

Virtual Machine Platform
Windows Hypervisor Platform

I don't know what they are for and whether one or both of these need to be disabled as well.
Disabling the second one, Windows Hypervisor Platform, is what I would try first but I don't have a system to try it on and no idea what it might do to yours. You would have to go through the steps to reset the <p_vm_extensions_disabled> flag again.

Just a note on your byron VM, it lists Hyper-V Paravirtualization under System properties. I don't know if it should be listed there or not but if Hyper-V has been turned off on the machine why would it be there ?

I think you need someone running the same version of Windows 10 Pro who has made the project work explain what they did or what settings they have.

the following is from marmot's wiwdows 7 computer - Number of processors - 8

Number of processors --------- 8
Virtualization ---------------------- Virtualbox (5.2.32) installed, CPU has hardware virtualization support and it is enabled
Operating System --------------- Microsoft Windows 7 Professional x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00)

I reinstalled BOINC from BOINC web page -

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

Yesterday web page said: Virtualization ---- Virtualbox (6.0.14) installed ---CPU does not have hardware virtualization support

today web page page said: Virtualization --- Virtualbox (5.2.8) installed --- CPU has hardware virtualization support but it is disabled

https://quchempedia.univ-angers.fr/athome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=395

this computer - Number of processors 8

Progress:)

so i guess i have to go back into BIOS and make sure enable?

well, I think I am defeated.

I don't have the computer skills or knowledge to figure out why my 8 core windows 10 box will not run QuChem WU.

thank you, everyone, for taking the time to read and post in this thread, your help it is much appreciated.

Follow these steps in order:
1. Turn on VT-X in your BIOS
2. Reboot
3. Detach from QuChemPedIA
4. Attach to QuChemPedIA

That should fix it.
You don't need to do 3 and 4.
You do need to reset the p_vm_extensions_disabled tag in the client_state.xml file.

Stop BOINC from running.
In your BOINC top level directory you will find a file called client_state.xml.
Open this file with a simple editor (eg Notepad on Windows) and look for this line:

<p_vm_extensions_disabled>1</p_vm_extensions_disabled>

You need to change the 1 to a 0 (zero)
This line is usually absent from the file unless you have tried to run VBox tasks without having enabled the Virtualisation (VT-X in Windows) beforehand.

So line should look like this after you've changed it:

<p_vm_extensions_disabled>0</p_vm_extensions_disabled>

Save the file.

The file needs to be in plain text so using a fancy editor that leaves formatting characters will mess it up.

Restart BOINC and get more tasks, they should then work.

I haven't been able to run vbox apps on my Win7 PC for probably a couple years now. This fixed it! Thanks.

Sorry but It seems that the QuChemPedIA work units don't run on windows stations.
I have Windows 10 Home and 4GB ram (but only 1900MB available).
Hyper-V is not present on Windows 10 home.
When the work unit begins , in boinc manager i can see the progress during 2 or 3 minutes before the sentence "...will be restarted later".

In windows task manager , no appearance of the work unit running under a virtual box instance.
Twice , i have rebooted my computer , i modified the VirtualBox version too. (6.0.14-->6.1.0) and added the similar guest additions.
But no effect , no change.Result is always the same.

I ran only one work unit at a time.

Here are the stderr.txt files :

I tried to start manualy the file "vm_image.vdi" situated in the slot directory to see what happens , with virtualbox.
The vm starts untill appears the line "mount VBOXSF..."
"mount.vboxsf : shared folder 'shared' was not found (check VM settings / spelling)"
"ERROR: worker failed to start"

When i try to manage the shared folder to be set up inside the VM , created manually , the vm goes further but stop saying " line 18 not found"

If someone has the skill to fix it , do it.

I have applied the advice of the Yeti's checklist present on the LHC forum with no result.

When i use the software LeoMoon CPU-V.The 2 items are validated "Virtualization is supported and is enabled"

What are the specific requirements for these work units ? (Has a test been made about the amount of ram needed? , or the open ports necessary ?, single core or multicore ?).I didn't see an official item speaking about it on the web site.

Who are the windows users successfull ? Can they say more about their configuration ? (virtualbox version or cpu)? Plenty of users have their computer hidden , so it is difficult to compare the situations...

Thanks for your help...

In order to solve the problem encountered , i downgraded virtualbox version to 5.2.32 with the guest additions associated.
And HIP!HIP!HIP! HOURRA!
It works.
A virtualbox headless instance is running in the windows tasks manager.
I don't know why and if another version among 5.2.32 and 6.0.14 is fine.
But it is worth saying it to other potential windows volunteers.

I will know only tomorrow if this wu is going to finish succesfully.

So there is maybe something to adapt , following the virtualbox version used...Or next versions have to be avoided by volunteers.(keeping 5.2.32 version).

So the links for this version 5.2.32 and its guest additions

Good Crunch !

Just had my first set of tasks, all failed and looking into why it seems Hardware Virtualisation is a requirement.

In that case as my CPU i7-4790K does not have that feature then I will need to pass on this project for now.

No one can do everything, right :)

Yes it does. I have used it for years. Just enable it in the BIOS (probably called "Intel VT-x Technology").

Hello everyone,
I see I am not alone.
All mly CPU (i7-2600K, I7-3830K, Ryzen9-3900X) has virtualzation capacity and enabled.
It works on all PRJ.
I can also manually install a separate VM on all my hosts.
Only this PRJ says : no VM .
Who (what) is is wrong ???

Have you read this thread and followed all the necessary steps on how to reset the p_vm_extensions_disabled tag in the client_state.xml file ?

Good point, but I think all the recent versions of BOINC have made that unnecessary. But check anyway to see.
