BOINC 7.18.1 causes invalids
(Message 1744)
Posted 9 May 2022 by Tullio Post: I am using BOINC 7.18.1 on a Linux Virtual Machine running SuSE Tumbleweed, a development version of Linux updated very frequently. Now its kernel is 5.17.4. When the kernel is updted I have to reboot after installing it. It is running Einstein@home and QuChemPedIA@home. When rebooted it warns that 7.18.1 is a development version and might not work, but it does. Tullio |

BOINC 7.18.1 causes invalids
(Message 1685)
Posted 28 Feb 2022 by Tullio Post: I am using BOINC 7.18.1 on my Linux Virtual Machine running OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, and nwchem runs fine. Since the Tunbleweed kernel is frequently updated and I have to reboot, a message comes out that 7.18.1 is a development version and could cause errrors. Tullio |

Posted 5 Jan 2022 by Tullio Post: I am using VirtualBox on QuChemPedIA@home, with 1900 MB RAM usage, Atllas@homw on LHC@homw, 4899 MB RAM, rosetta python, 6144 RAM, and I don't jhave any problem on Atlas and rosetta python. Onlu on QuChem i get some unmanageable task and I exit BOINC and restart. I am running nwchem on a Linux Virtual Machine using OpenSuSE Tumbleweed, which is a development version with BOINC 7.18.1, kernel 5.15.12 so ifrequently updated that I have to reboot almost daily, with no problem. It als runs Einstein@home. Tullio |

Why does this project only want to support Vbox 5.4.x?
(Message 1610)
Posted 29 Dec 2021 by Tullio Post: Electricity prices are raising also in Italy. I am paying 0.088 euro/kWh plus some fixed costs including the decommissioning of the 4 spent Italian nuclear reactors. I have been informed that from March 1 I shall pay 0,093 euro/kWh plus a fixed monthly cost of 9 euro, this because I am a long time user. But new users pay much more as I see from advertisements. Electricity producers often offer Amazon bonuses to appeal to customers. Tullio |

Why does this project only want to support Vbox 5.4.x?
(Message 1608)
Posted 28 Dec 2021 by Tullio Post: I have Einstein on another PC, a recent laptop with an AMD CPU with graphic capabilities . Another, my fastest AMD PC, runs WCG but also a Linux Virtual Machine running both Einstein and QuChem on a SuSE Tumbleweed Linux, which is a Development version and has a 5.15.8 kernel. It is frequently updated and I have to reboot it. On the Intel PC from which I am writing I run QuChem, Rosetta@home and, alternating, LHC@home. Another older laptop runs QuChem on a SuSE Leap 15.0. I am trying to distribute my BOINC projects on 4 PCs plus one Virtual Machine. All this hardware costs me about 50 euros/month in electricity. Tullio |

Waiting for memory

Posted 27 Nov 2021 by Tullio Post: I use GPU-Z to control my memory usage. Yes, i still get "waiting for memory" while running both QuChem and Rosetta python on VBox tasks. But I only have 12 GB RAM on this PC. On another I have 24 GB RAM but only 11 GB available on disk for BOINC, so Rosetta python will not run on it.It needs 19 GB. Tullio |

how to solve problems related to virtualization
(Message 1561)
Posted 11 Nov 2021 by Tullio Post: I am runing 6 BOINC projects on 4 different CPUs,3 using Windows 10 and 11, one Linux and a Linux Virtual Machinwe. I am an old UNIX user in my professional life, and I was surprised to see that on QuChem most, if not all, Windows tasks using VirtualBox are faster than their Linux wingmen. So I stuck to Windows on ths project. Tullio |
