My inconclusives are coming from people somehow completing tasks in 3 seconds.

mmmmmm....are you sure about that?

There was 1 user with negative 1.2mil credit on the day the admin said it was removed. A former team member whom I would not have guessed to be a cheater.

Many would prefer a fixed credit system especially for nearly equal run times but run times all over the place for this project.

No one was cheating. Nice way to jump to conclusions.

The thread title, from the admin of the project, has the word cheating.

5) Message boards : Science : What are you calculating? Some explanation (Message 372)

The first calculation is the optimization of the atomic positions. A geometrical optimization to obtain the 3D atomic positions that is the most stable. If the starting atomic positions are far from the stable ones, this step can take a very long time. Hence, the sometimes unpredictable very long calculations times! (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_minimization but it is quite mathematical.)

Hi Thomas, Is this the reason every few days that all tasks are resends? Every task is either A) very old like a dsgdb9nsd_nwchem with multiple errors or B) a validate error from another user? For days everything is a new task with _0 then everything is _1 or sometimes _5, _6. During this period of resends it seems like much of our work is wasted along with the many, many....many validate errors.

NWChem that is used here for the calculations of the molecules, profit from multithreading only with bigger molecules.

I don't know if NWChem supports gpu calculation (CUDA or, better, OpenCL), but this may be a great improvement...

Just ignore this user. They make the same comment at every BOINC project like GPUs are some voodoo magic.

Is there any hope that native QCP will get checkpointing added???
Some WUs are running a long time and a lot of electricity may be wasted if one has to start over for any of many reasons.

If it runs for a long time then it's probably a bad task. Abort it.

Something happened to the tasks over the weekend. They either
1 - Run for a couple of seconds with validate errors.
2 - Run for days and never reach 100% with the CPU usage dropping.
3 - Get to 100% and never complete with the GPU usage dropping.

They just aren't completing like they were in the past week.

Hi Thomas,
What are the hardware requirements to accomplish a task?
I had to abort a task, after it's deadline was 14 days, but my pc would estimate to finish the task in 26 days.
Can i run this better on a multicore CPU, or is a single core CPU of at least 5Ghz needed to beat the deadline?

ETAs will correct themselves after completing some tasks. They typically complete before the ETA.

Follow these steps in order:
1. Turn on VT-X in your BIOS
2. Reboot
3. Detach from QuChemPedIA
4. Attach to QuChemPedIA

That should fix it.
You don't need to do 3 and 4.
You do need to reset the p_vm_extensions_disabled tag in the client_state.xml file.

Stop BOINC from running.
In your BOINC top level directory you will find a file called client_state.xml.
Open this file with a simple editor (eg Notepad on Windows) and look for this line:

<p_vm_extensions_disabled>1</p_vm_extensions_disabled>

You need to change the 1 to a 0 (zero)
This line is usually absent from the file unless you have tried to run VBox tasks without having enabled the Virtualisation (VT-X in Windows) beforehand.

So line should look like this after you've changed it:

<p_vm_extensions_disabled>0</p_vm_extensions_disabled>

Save the file.

The file needs to be in plain text so using a fancy editor that leaves formatting characters will mess it up.

Restart BOINC and get more tasks, they should then work.

I haven't been able to run vbox apps on my Win7 PC for probably a couple years now. This fixed it! Thanks.
